All the Summer festive season activities, followed by the Easter holidays are over; it's time to gear ourselves up again for the deep, dark days of Winter that will be upon us before we know it. Owners of holiday resorts, game reserves, holiday accommodation, apartments, campsites and so on; I hope you came out of those dreadful lockdowns with your businesses intact.
Students, graduates, PhD. candidates, on the other hand, have a different agenda. They don't have to only think about the rest of the year, but rather about preparing for the rest of their lives. The decisions they make in these formative years after completing school or university will determine the direction their lives will take; while at the same time wanting to enjoy the fruits of their academic endeavours and have some fun; explore different career possibilities, travel and so on.
THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER
The world is truly your oyster and all those juicy flavours are there for you to savour; whether you wish to be an explorer, a dedicated sportsman or woman, an inspirational entrepeneur who will held drive the world in a new direction, like Elon Musk or Bill Gates, or Henry Ford, or even a priest who helps his flock to navigate the treasures or troubles that beset their lives.
Whether you decide on a career in politics, in academia or engineering; its your job to discover the essential thread that if you play the cards right will enable you and those around you to have a deeply fulfilling life, you will probably soon discover that language is a key that will open many doors for you.
WHY LEARN ENGLISH?
In many countries in the world, English is the most widely used language. It is key for doing business in most of the leading countries in the world , including the USA, and UK. In Europe, a medley of languages is used, and English is not sufficient on its own and will probably have be supplemented by at least one other leading European language such as German or French.
Many wealthy potentates in the far and near Eastern countries such as the UAE, China, Indonesia and India send their children to English or American universities; simply because fluency in English is the key to pursuing business, politics, diplomacy ands many other diverse fields.
That is the reason why we draw clients from many different areas in the world; all of whom wish to become proficient in English. It is a universal language.
After this long preamble, I come to the point of this exercise:
Once again, it is time to assist all you scholars in many different fields a few English hints and tips hat we use every day in our work so you don't go off-track regarding this fascinating language:
HINTS AND TIPS.
- try to use a verb in in every sentence you write. It gives 'punch' and brevity to all your sentences and aids understanding and clarity.
- Never use 'comprises of' - just write 'comprises'.
- 'Impacted' is sufficient in its own. Do not write 'impacted on.'
- 'Practice' is a noun e.g. "my father " has his own medical practice."
- 'practise' is a verb; thus " I am going to practise my bowling" is correct.
- Active voice and Passive Voice.
- Excessive use of Passive Voice is a NO NO!
- Example 'Joe walked to the rugby field' - correct. 'The rugby field was the direction Joe decided to take' - incorrect! (this is passive voice. It is clumsy, too long and confusing for the reader.
Above all; clear, concise, accurate language is always the best. Avoid repetition of the same phrase or paragraph at all costs. Don't use a word if you are not sure precisely what it means. Rather use a simpler, more accurate word.
